The Only Ocean ‘Fake Sunflowers’

The Only Ocean are a four -piece atmospheric rock band from Lompoc, CA — a town most notable for its high security prison and its annual Flower Festival. Friends since junior high, the band taps into a level of unity that is typically only achieved by sibling groups, like the Beach Boys or the Jonases, their tight modern grooves locking together to support a soft bed of crackling guitars and soaring vocals. In 2015, they released their self-titled debut album, a polished collection of dreamy psych-rock bangers, produced by Jonathan DeBaun (The Mars Volta, Omar Rodríguez-López). After a year of supporting the record with energetic shows spanning the California coast, they returned to studio to record a 5-track follow up EP, titled ‘TOO’; a denser and more aggressive effort, with lead single ‘Cul-De-Sac’ approaching hardcore and punk rock in its ferocity. Tracks like ‘So Shy So High’ hinted at a more ornate and melodic direction to come. With the recent addition of guitarist Mic Singh, The Only Ocean’s sound has expanded to even grander proportions. Their recent release, ‘Good Morning’, is a confident and deliberate side-step into the festival rock arena, with producer DeBaun again returning to put his signature flair on things, dutifully guiding the band into new territory. The Only Ocean have now released their new single ‘Fake Sunflowers’ which follows the new solid sound of ‘Good Morning’ .

‘Fake Sunflowers’ flickers and bleeps with flashing sonic soundscapes against strident sharp guitars and an infectious beat. The soaring chorus adds an ethereal quality to the track while the lush sweet melody glides along smooth and creamy like honey to the ears. Tight harmonies add a multi dimension and rich texture to the track while the electronic soundscape adds a psychedelic dreamy vibe. It’s displayed simply but backed by richly layered intricate instrumentation. Another sublime track from The Only Ocean.

“Silent Witness is about a young girl who finds herself in a difficult situation. She’s at an age where her friends are beginning to experiment with new ventures however she doesn’t feel like she’s ready to join them just yet and doesn’t want to rush into maturing too quickly. When she finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, she has to make an important decision whether to live up to her friends’ expectations or whether to listen to her heart and not go through with it. The song explores the different emotions that the young girl goes through at this tough time. She wants to remain credible but wants to be sensible, so does she go through with it? You’ll have to listen to the song to find out…”.

Luke August ‘Need Nobody’

Luke August will release his latest single ‘Need Nobody’ on Tuesday. ‘Need Nobody’ was worked with Grammy Award winning mastering engineer William Bowden (Gotye, Bluejuice, Paul Dempsey).
‘Need Nobody’ is a melodic track filled with intense emotion and set to subtle music. August displays a state of Zen restraint as the track flows with gentle elegance and posture while maintaining an edge by adding indie guitar pop and R&B influences. Its stripped back yet instrumentally rich. Sharp bright guitar ripples throughout with a sticky beat that adds thick tension and raw intimacy. Darker tones add an eerie quality which is lifted by the twinkling on guitar. Smooth vocals add a sleek soothing quality and passion to the track. ‘Need Nobody’ is a brooding emotionally raw track that throbs and oozes with sonic flecks and refined guitar while leaving you with a stillness to reflect on.

In contrast to his previous tracks, ‘Refugee’ and ‘One Heart’, ‘Need Nobody’ is a story of independence and acknowledging your inner strength to empower yourself. August says the opening line, “First you get drunk, then you get love”, a concept born in a moment of solitude and stillness, is a notion that most can relate to. August extracted his own emotions that gravitate around the opening line and infused the raw sentiment into the vibe of ‘Need Nobody’.
‘Need Nobody” will be available globally on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and all major digital platforms on Tuesday March 21st, 2017
