Rory and the Island ‘Call My Name’

Irish artist Rory and the Island has released his new single ‘Call My Name’, alongside announcing the release of his highly anticipated new album ‘Centre Falls Apart’ – which is set for release on 11th March on new Irish indie label Voices of the Sea. Donegal singer/songwriter Rory Gallagher, who has been releasing music since 2011 under the project name Rory and the Island has had quite the 17 months since the global pandemic began. After moving his family to Edinburgh in Scotland to open a brand new live music bar in the city called “The Wildcat” in March 2020, the venue never saw it’s official opening night due to Covid19 and Rory Gallagher found himself locked down in a new city and very very lost. Like most musicians, Rory and the Island began live Facebook gigs every week and opted for “escapism” in his shows making them very colourful, upbeat and quirky as opposed to holding a mirror up to the depressing situation. Rory and the Island gradually built up 30,000 facebook followers with some of his shows averaging up to 50k views on FB watch playback during the week. This huge outpouring of new interest has led to Rory and the Island having 7 sold-out shows in Ireland and the UK, with his Dublin and Belfast shows in Opium and the Blackbox selling out in less than 48 hours.

‘Call My Name’ is a musical gem from Rory and the Island. There is something utterly soothing and elegant about this track. Tender songwriting is enhanced by passionate vocals, delicate violin and warm cello accompaniment while supple beats and mellow acoustic guitar chime in the backdrop. The track is a glorious, easy listening treasure that oozes emotion and the beautifully expressive musicianship of Rory and the Island. Love it.

Speaking of the single and the announcement of the album Rory and the Island said: “I’m so delighted and shocked that 25 years after releasing my first self funded album in Donegal at the age of 18, and then moving on through “The Revs” in the noughties that I am still able to write and release my own original songs into the public domain. I have become immune to supposed failures and rejections and I still have the exact same love for it as I did when I was 18, it’s the music and the communication that matters”

Scattered Ashes ‘This New Will’

Scattered Ashes have released their new single ‘This New Will’. The track follows The ‘Parallel Lines EP’, released on blood red vinyl,  selling out in its first week in Rough Trade stores throughout the UK. 2021 ended with sell-out Dublin and London shows, alongside support with Sprints and THUMPER. Scattered Ashes come straight out of the Dublin post-punk underground that birthed Murder Capital and Fontaines DC. The four-piece rapidly developed a name for themselves with their debut single ‘Love Is Not An Option’ receiving immediate support and airplay from Steve Lamacq (BBC Radio 6) and KEXP over in the states. The band are now set to embark on a series of Irish & UK shows in support of the single, including dates in Dublin, Galway, London, Manchester and Leeds.

With a glorious guitar refrain peering above a heavy rhythmic wall of sound, ‘This New Will’ is an exciting new single from Scattered Ashes. The song deals with the topic of disintegration and rebirth. Eloquent swirling instrumentation creates moments of innocence within the track’s overwhelming sense of melancholy while a lamenting melody and deep vocals express the song’s poetic lyrical depth, “there’s a price for pain, it’s so much different than before”. Showcasing majestic guitar work between outbursts of distortion and psychedelia, ‘This New Will’ is a compelling new tune from Scattered Ashes.

About the track, frontman Robert Dalton remarks that “A lifetime of self-denial leads to a dramatic overhaul of character: a new hope, a new urge, a new will. This is our most poignant song yet.”

Robocobra Quartet ‘Heaven’

Belfast’s Robocobra Quartet have returned with new single ‘Heaven’. The track is the first new material in three years. The news comes on the heels of their recent signing to Deptford-based label First Taste Records and the announcement of a highly anticipated new album to come later in the year.Robocobra Quartet are a collective of six members of wildly different musical backgrounds swapping in and out to make a touring quartet, which has taken them across Europe to Montreux Jazz Festival, Latitude Festival, and as far as Inversia Festival in the polar north of Russia, all while receiving acclaim from the likes of The Quietus, The Line Of Best Fit, Prog, and BBC Radio 6.

‘Heaven’ is a fine example of Robocobra Quartet’s catchy experimental sound. Chris W Ryan’s hypnotic vocals brood atop a unique instrumental sound of rich rhythms and intricate layering. Within the track’s soundscape, heavy bass lines groove against pulsing drums, palpitating keys and elements of jazz on saxophone – the effect is an exciting, intriguing display of musicianship that sounds fresh even after repeat listens. ‘Heaven’ is a thrilling listening experience that boasts Robocobra Quartet’s deft musical prowess. Looking forward to the new album.

Speaking on ‘Heaven’, Ryan says: “Heaven is about the cult-like mania of capitalism. I grew up listening to Dead Kennedys and always liked how they would write songs from the perspective of a character they didn’t necessarily agree with. There’s something fascinating about the stories that emerge and I wanted to get inside that extremely chaotic and self-absorbed headspace. I loved the idea of singing as someone so narcissistic they find their newborn child beautiful just because they look alike.”
