Brian Protheroe ‘Don’t Look Down’

Singer – songwriter and actor Brian Protheroe, best known for the cult ‘70’s hit ‘Pinball’ has made his eagerly awaited return with the release of his new single ‘Don’t Look Down’, recorded with producer Julian Littman and featuring British blues legend Paul Jones on harmonica, is the first new material since the ‘Sad Song’ single from 2016. Digitally available at all the usual major outlets, the new track comes backed with ‘Backaway’ which was originally recorded in 1975, but has been remixed with added horns. Inspired by Cliff and The Shadows, in his early teens Brian was the lead singer of a UK band called The Coasters in 1961 and at the same time also enrolled in an amateur theatre group called The Studio Theatre. He joined Folk Blues Incorporated (FBI) when he was nineteen and came to London, playing in folk music clubs in and around the city. In 1966, Protheroe began his acting career and spent the next five years in various theatre companies developing his musical skills as well as becoming an experienced actor. In 1973, Protheroe was playing the part of a pop singer in a play, Death on Demand, when a Chrysalis Records rep heard a song he had written for the show and the label signed him. The debut single ‘Pinball’ was released in August 1974 and peaked at number 22 in the UK Singles Chart.  He released three albums over the next couple of years, but a developing acting career had found him and he temporarily shelved his career in music and focused successfully on theatre, television, and film. The advent of the internet saw a resurgence in interest for his music and he released the ‘Citysong’ album in 2005 followed by a greatest hits collection called ‘Pinball and Other Stories’ in 2006. A recent addition to ‘The London Playlist’ on Robert Elms BBC Radio London Show, Noel Gallagher recently cited ‘Pinball’ as an influence on the opening track on his ‘Chasing Yesterday’ album from 2015 after being introduced to the song by Morrissey.

‘Don’t Look Down’ is a shuffling bluesy number drenched in rich warm melodies and catchy little jingles. Filled with soul and swagger this track charms its way into your brain with its catchy chorus, vibrant guitar strums, lush backing vocals and shaky rhythm. Protheroe’s smooth vocals coo’s through the darkened mysterious country-esque soundscapes while a glorious sweet toned harmonica injects a twanging warmth and thrilling whine into this rich tune. It’s a satisfying, swanky return from Brian Protheroe

Willie Breeding ‘Ride On’

Nashville based newcomer Willie Breeding has released his new single ‘Ride On’ with his debut album ‘Big Sky’ set for release later this summer. This lonesomely haunting western- esque track is immersed in rich wavy melodies seeped between gritty guitars that churn and coil around Breeding’s deep country baritone. The ghostly yet sweet backing vocals provided by Emily Hagihara create a chilling atmosphere as they wisp about the track while the Americana- esque sound fills it with a head strong lone ranger vibe. The guitar riff instantly grabs attention as it builds into a shrilling cinematic tremble on guitar before the guns and holster showdown. It’s nostalgically sweet yet dangerously gripping and dramatic while the melty melancholic melody flurries along-lighthearted and carefree. Perfectly crafted this track is both picturesque and musically exciting. Willie Breeding is one to keep an eye out for, his style is magnificently unique and utterly thrilling.

When asked about the track Breeding explains “It’s a song making fun of myself, When I first moved to Nashville, I used to go out and often when I would walk into the bar, I would walk straight through it and out the back door. It wasn’t a conscious thing, I almost wouldn’t even remember being in the bar. Then I would have no idea where to go or what to do. Living in New York, I always loved going out by myself. Did it for years. Nashville seemed very different. So I wanted the music to sound huge, and I had this big riff. Seemed appropriate for a song making fun of myself.”

Worth A Listen

Our Worth A Listen Track This Week Comes From April Towers

Nottingham duo April Towers have announced their long awaited debut album ‘Certified Freaky’ which will be released this spring through their own imprint Full Frequency Sounds/Republic of Music. To coincide with the announcement, April Towers have shared a new single ‘Tel Aviv’ which is taken from their debut. Having played together in other bands previously, the duo of Alex Noble (vocals, guitars & keyboards) and Charlie Burley (production, samples, guitars & keyboards) embarked on their latest project in August 2013 and April Towers were born. A series of 6 singles and EPs culminating in last summer’s ‘Takes One To Know One’ followed suit, one of which (2015’s ‘A Little Bit Of Fear’) earned them a place on the official FIFA 2016 soundtrack. Throughout their existence they’ve been building momentum and working towards ‘Certified Freaky’ . The single is the first song Alex and Charlie wrote together when they formed as a duo 4 years ago, ‘Tel Aviv’ is a two faced song in many ways: upbeat tempo and vocal highs are coupled with pretty dark lyrics. Recorded at Soho’s legendary Dean Street Studios (in the same room David Bowie recorded Diamond Dogs) over the course of last year, the album was co-produced by the band along with respected electronic artist/DJ Ben Pearce, mixed by Nathan Boddy (Gary Numan, Shame, James Blake) and mastered by Geoff Pesche (Gorillaz, Kylie Minogue, Pulp) at Abbey Road Studios. The whole album was crowd funded via Pledge Music and the band played a sold out show in their native city of Nottingham last September to commemorate this.

‘Tel Aviv’ is a shimmering, infectious slice of synthetic pop encased in luscious snappy soundscapes with a delicious melody iced on top. A sticky beat slaps and whacks between flashing synths and subtle swirling electronics creating a surge of adrenaline throughout the track. Smooth vocals caress this pop drizzled melody while lush backing vocals coo with an eerie haunting undertone filling out the sound. The snappy rhythm creates a dancable groove that is infectious and captivating as the ethereal soundscapes rush past giving a soaring aerial feel. It’s tightly bound to create a charming wall of sound that is captivating and utterly infectious.

April Towers’ live set has also developed over time to incorporate live bass, drums and percussion which gives it a more organic and less mechanistic feel while retaining the vibrant energy of a late night in clubland. Since forming, they’ve played numerous festivals both in the UK and Europe and this summer are already scheduled to play Y Not as well as their first ever headline slot at Deerstock in July. The duo have already confirmed a string of UK dates in April, with many more to be announced soon.
