Indie Quick Picks – Featuring Clodagh, 1000 Beasts, Idle Noise and Indian Queens

Clodagh

Genre : Soul pop

Bio : Clodagh a singer, from Macroom Co. Cork, has received a lot of praise for her vocal style. In addition to studying at BIMM Dublin, Clodagh has trained under renowned vocal coaches Gemma Sugrue (RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Chic, Billy Ocean, Jerry Fish, Lee Fields) and Chris Johnson (The Naked Vocalist).Last year, she was selected to do a residency at Attica Audio, as part of Donegal Arts Festival, with producers Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers, Soak, In Their Thousands, Ailbhe Reddy) and Rocky O’Reilly (Gary Lightbody, And So I Watch You From Afar, The Wood Burning Savages).She was also chosen for a specialist jazz course in Izola, Slovenia, where she worked with Emilia Martensson, her sister Marina Martensson (from the band Laibach) and Femi Temowo (guitarist for Amy Winehouse)

Why We Like It: This soul number wisps with lush melodies, pulsing beats and darkly coated electronics. Clodagh’s rich and hazy vocals exude passion and emotion without becoming overpowering. Her ability to lull and coo with sultry smoulders between soulful tones and tender elements is impressive.With twinkling keys, R&B elements and ethereal soundscape this track broods and slides effortlessly into the ears. Clodagh has marked herself as one to keep an eye on.

1000 Beasts

Genre : Electronic indie

Bio : 1000 Beasts is an electronic producer & musician coming from Cork City. Starting off producing electronic pop songs in 2017, he got a strong press support especially thanks to his frequent plays on radio stations such as TodayFM, 2FM, CoolFM (NI) and even BBC Radio 1, including a RTE Studio 8 live session with Jenny Greene on 2FM.On ‘Le Marais’ 1000 Beasts collaborated with young Dublin born, but London based, artist Kayleigh Noble. The track is the first in a series of collaborations between Noble & 1000 Beasts and sets a precedent for repeated collaborations which are with other artists such as Lenii & Alex Tierney who have featured on 1000 Beasts debut EP.

Why We Like It: It’s a laid back groove-laced number. The sweet hazy vocals caress the dreamy melody with warm tones and soft coos. The intricacies of ‘Le Marais’ are subtly layered within the song while a mellow jazz tone delights the listener with lush embellishments. This easy going gem has pacifying tones and R&B elements blended with electronic indie to create a refreshing and breezy track. 1000 Beasts presents a chill ear worm to immerse yourself in.

Idle Noise

Genre : Indie Rock

Bio : Idle Noise are an indie rock quartet from Coventry.The last few years have seen them play alongside the likes of The Charlatans and The Wombats with 2 consecutive main stage slots at Coventry’s Godiva Festival, as well as a range of other shows and artists across the UK. More recently, they supported Coventry’s own Tom Clarke (The Enemy) at a sold out hometown show in December 2019, followed by the band’s own sold out headline show at Manchester’s iconic Deaf Institute in January 2020. Since forming, every track the foursome have released has been aired on BBC Introducing radio, with their 2019 singles ‘Rapture’ and ‘Everybody Gets Famous’ also being frequently featured on pre match and half-time playlists at League One and Championship Football clubs Coventry City and Luton Town.

Why We Like It: It’s a powerful and explosive indie anthem.With a sing along arena-ready chorus belting through a crashing wall of sound, Idle Noise pack oodles of passion and gusto into this track. Indian Queens

Bio : London/Irish dream-pop trio Indian Queens are fronted by sisters Jen and Kat O’Neill and were personally invited by Robert Smith of The Cure to play his Meltdown Festival in 2019. They also have fans in Tim Wheeler of Ash and Theresa Wayman of Warpaint, both of whom have taken the band out as tour support. This track is taken from their debut album ‘God Is A Woman’ which was released on 3rd April via Cool Thing Records.The band have also received radio support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6music, Radio X, 2FM, Today FM

About the track the band said: “Monday’ is about the turning point in life where the band is starting to realise we are not as young as we used to be. We can’t keep going out like we used to but there’s an internal battle you have of ‘am I told old for this?’ or ‘You only live once, why not?!’.Ultimately it’s about pushing aside the responsibilities of real life and having fun.”

Bio : Kelan Galligan is an alt-folk artist from Derry in Northern Ireland. He has recently released his new single ‘Shadows’ .

A soft twinkling on guitars and elegant piano provides the light first half of the track which leads into the clouded darker tone of the crescendo. Indie Quick Picks – Twin Stranger, Skyfever, TwentyTwenty, Bad Love and Greyson Chance

Bio : Twin Stranger is a Welsh 5 piece power-pop project led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Alex McConnachie. Initially a bedroom recording project, McConnachie enlisted his multi-instrumentalist brother Liam as well as friends, bassist Josh Newington, Joe Tobin on keyboards and drummer Eric Karvik. Following their successful debut single ‘Tears of Joy’ which was released in February 2020, Twin Stranger have released follow up single ‘Crushed’, after being tipped by BBC Introducing and SiriusXM in the US.

Why We Like It: A sweet melody drips onto a bubbling indie backdrop. Garage-infused guitar mingles with rich instrumentation as a 90’s vibe wafts through the track while smooth vocals coo cynical lyrics over the dreamy melody. With a tightly weaved fuzzy bass and rich percussion Twin Stranger have created a well layered luminous gem. The hazy guitar riff and radiant licks slice through the buoyant soundscape as the track meanders between sweet daydream pop and moody grunge effortlessly. ‘Crushed’ is vibrant, catchy and luscious on the ears.

Bio : Twenty Twenty are an indie band based in Liverpool, UK. The lineup consists of drummer Ethan Furey, vocalist and guitarist Patrick Joseph and keys player Niamh Mailer. The trio set out to create a very dense warm and direct sound, tipping the hat off to genres as diverse as alternative rock, indie, dreampop, psycedelic rock and managing to sound like a reverb pedal on LSD.

Why We Like It: There are wonderful intricacies within this track that weave beneath the tracks alternative rock surface to create a sophisticated mature number. A rooted bass wiggles through the songs foundation creating a dark underbelly while the thrashing drums slap and roll throughout causing fluctuations in the rhythm. The melancholic vocals hold a sweet soft tone reminiscent of early Paul McCartney as the dreamy melody drifts with a delicate innocence through the dynamic instrumentation.With majestic moments on guitars colliding with gritty raw riffs Fossway create sublime textures and contrasts through the song. The band have layered this track superbly creating wonderful dramatic highs with heavy mosh worthy soundscapes and soft tender twinkles all within a vigorous and refined wall of sound. It’s impressively hypnotic and utterly infectious.

Why We Like It: It’s a passionate indie banger. Swarmed in exuberant youthful musicianship the band submerge a sweet catchy melody into an effervescent pool of dynamic instrumentation. The track is robust and well built with a driving bass line that weaves between soaring lush guitar lines and punchy drum progressions. This band find a wonderful balance between vigorous blasting alternative rock with a raw pounding wall of sound and sweet majestic indie brimming with heartfelt emotion. The meandering between light ethereal guitars and crashing riffs is superb as Vansleep flourish and embellish their track with skill and maturity. With emotive vocals that soar over the kinetic backdrop, rich rhythm and smooth melody, ‘Acid Weather’ is quite the charming and earnest ditty. One of my favourite finds.

With jagged guitar slicking through pounding drums this energetic track runs at a hyper pace with adrenaline pumping from every note. There are laid back 90’s rock moments mangled between frenetic punk whacks and soaring indie as Shape Pitaki create an invigorating number brimming with sublime musicianship and oodles of energy.

They have also supported the likes of Indoor Pets, Sheafs and Gender Roles along with being shortlisted for Truck Festival and Y Not Festival.

Why We Like It: Consumed in blazing indie swagger ‘Chloe’ is instantly likeable and infectious. With an eargasmic melody spread over ebullient drums and relentless guitars the track is an instant shot of adrenaline. The majestic guitars soar, sting and sweetly lament through the crashing wall of sound while the rampant bass lays down an effortless cool nonchalance. The band do a fantastic job of blending hyper joyous indie with a delicious smackeroo of pop on top. Laissez Faire provides rich, tasty and invigorating musicianship and ‘Chloe’ is a sublime example of this.

There is a clap along rhythmic bounce with rich musical embellishments between the instant charming bop while the honest and quite cynical lyrical content provides a quirky contrast. With vibrant vocals rebounding off the golden melting melody Metro Station create a track that revolves around and chimes in your head all day long until you’re singing along.

Bio : Former Future Kings of Spain members guitarist Karl Hussey and drummer Bryan McMahon join ex-Bambi bassist Dan Barry to bring you Badself. Finally finding time in ‘Lockdown’, Badself released ‘Stay Down’, the opening track and first single from the band’s debut album ‘The Three Daughters of Mara’ which was recorded with producer Ronan McHugh (Def Leppard).

Why We Like It: With a demon summoning dirty bass rumbling through the tracks underbelly Badself present a lean mean rock track set to revolve in your head for days. The track slithers its way into your head as bright guitars glisten with a swagger dipped slinky texture while the pounding drums maintain a solid raw foundation.This track is a powerful beast laced in sensual dark bluesy tones as its acute wallop of rock drives the songs backbone. With powerful vocals and no nonsense attitude ‘Stay Down’ is an old school sweat and leather rock anthem.

Bio : Broozer are a Wolverhampton based Punk Rock Outfit. Since their formation they have played at iconic venues in Birmingham and the West Midlands. In their first year they were discovered by Wyatt Wendall of Planet Rock and featured on his New Rock Show several times and supported The Virgin Marys. They have now added long term good friend and previous drummer Dan Collins to their lineup.

The accompanying video ostensibly appears to be the fulfilment of a male fantasy – the horny teenager and the sexually available teacher. It was filmed during the Coronavirus pandemic adhering to safety measures. Keen-eyed treasure hunters will also find an easter egg somewhere in the video

Why We Like It: Once again Mint knock it out of the park with their rampant, stuffy and exhilarating sound. The band whirlwind into a neck snapping frantic run from the get go with jabbing drums clammering through a fuzz fuelled backdrop while the chorus swivels around acid eroding guitar lines. The track is hinged around the infectious vocal hook “this is your captain speaking / Never forget this feeling”  as the vocal exclaim grabs your mind with force until your singing along by the second chorus. ‘Turbulence’ is a intoxicating, punk-punched, grunge-smeared alternative track from Mint.

From light flurries on guitar to majestic and soaring strides Dukkha inject oodles of refinement and maturity into this song. The smooth passionate vocals caress the velvety melody with ease, charm and bucket loads of power. ‘Pulling Teeth’ is a gripping powerhouse and superbly crafted track from Dukkha.

Bio : After moving to Glasgow from Finland, Takala started a college course and met Ryan Jones (bass) and Matt Boyle (guitar). Why We Like It: Its a sultry dark track smudged with eerie synths and a sticky muggy beat. The track pulses and bloops as the reverb laced guitar swirls between the resounding bass. This tantalizing number creeps and coils with a stuffy humid atmosphere while the sultry lulling vocals coo with a velvety rich tone. The track is sublimely layered as the dark pop melodies fold elegantly over the ominous fluctuant synths and raw indie elements.

The synths crash with a majestic, ethereal yet suspenseful jab while sustained pines on guitar encase the mystery and danger. It’s equally dramatic and atmospheric as the soft twinkles to start contrast the heavy cinematic finale. With glimmers of emotional, sinister soundscapes and refined precise production Phoenix is one diverse unique number from De Staat.

With a funky bass line wriggling through the tracks underbelly teamed with bouncy beats and zesty writhing guitar injections, the track has an animated radiance. Each fragment is woven tightly into the song for a seamless listening experience while the R&B elements create a chilled relaxed atmosphere beneath the sun kissed bop. With a melty melody, honest lyrics and smooth vocals ‘My Time’ is a well crafted number from Lamadrid.

Idle Hours

Bio : Manchester quartet Idle Hours formed at university and have received plays on BBC Introducing Manchester, they bagged support shows with Radio 6 favourites The Orielles and Man of Moon, along with appearances at Dot to Dot and Neighbourhood Festival, sandwiched between Avalanche Party and Oscar Lang in the YES Basement. More recently, Idle Hours headlined AATMA to a sell-out audience.

Why We Like It: It’s a refreshing wave of indie as Idle Hours create a biting track submerged in a laid back soundscape. The band smudge a dreamy melody onto a jagged backdrop of sharp guitars and bouncy drums to create a fluctuant groove infested track. The rumble on bass weaves playfully beneath a vibrant guitar riff while the velvety rasp toned vocals caress the hazy melody. Idle Hours have a refined and well blended sound that is quite irresistible and infectious. The track balances a ratio of indie rawness and new wave sweetness superbly to  create a satisfying listening experience. 

About the track frontman Jack Waldron said :  “The song is very much an observation of how social media has become a bare necessity in the lives of today’s youths, myself included. You look around any environment and people are glued to it; I just think we should look up more often”.
