Why We Like It: It’s a dark number driven by gripping keys, heavy guitars, and a brooding atmosphere. Through honest lyrics, the band discuss the loss of community we have experienced in the last year as The Utopiates create a musical and expressive cry for help to the masses. With a shredding guitar solo, pulsing synths, and punchy drums the track exudes an 80’s rock persona however the lamenting and stark lyrics leave a bitter aftertaste. Impressive and utterly compelling.

Why We Like It: ‘Story Of Strife’ is an emotive and beautifully written single. Jangly warm guitars glide through the track with a folk rock-esque glow that comforts a sombre, lamenting melody. A steady beat maintains a lush swaying tempo while Austin Woodcock’s passionate vocals coo and surge with heartfelt emotion. The textures and tones provided by an array of guitar melodies within the track are captivating. Gloria embellish melancholic soundscapes with nimble refrains to create a wholesome and heartfelt song. This trio present a mature and immersive sound that is well beyond their years. Pushpin

Bio : Pushpin are a new and inventive band, based in South London. Their music has been featured on BBC Radio London, BBC Introducing and Soho Radio, and has been performed at 93 Feet East. They have further written and produced theatrical soundtracks at the Camden Peoples’ Theatre, and provided original compositions for XR London.‘Folds’ is the first of five songs written in 2020, as Pushpin got to grips with being a “virtual-based band”. Working apart, they exchanged voice notes, sampled microwaves, pots and pans, hoovers and whatever was to hand during the lockdown.

Why We Like It: Fizzing in a psychedelic synth explosion and sweet dream-pop elements with post-punk outbursts ‘Folds’ is a unique and thrilling single. The song bubbles in intricate grooves and sharp guitar riffs mixed with sweet pop bounces creating an instant charm and vibrancy that is infectious. The catchy melody glides with honeyed earworm tones into the ears allowing the distortion and heavy rhythms create an almost mosh effect as the dizzying synths crash into the mind-frazzling chorus. The song explores the elusiveness of self-love and affirmation while the track spirals in and out of control through numerous blending and colliding instrumental bursts. Pushpin take us from soft self-care mantras to drum-driven head pounding confusion in one swift swoop. ‘Folds’ is a fantastic new single.

Isaac Dunbar

Bio : Hailed as one of the most critically heralded new artists in 2020, 17-year-old Isaac Dunbar from Cape Cod, Massachusetts has released his new single ‘pink party’ which follows on from “intimate moments” and “love, or the lack thereof,” both of which will be featured on his forthcoming EP ‘evil twin’ set for release in February 2021.

Why We Like It: It’s a dark frenetic single which shows a new exhilarating side to Dunbar. Smothered in muggy electronics and an intoxicating beat the track has an eerie dance-infused soundscape as Dunbar’s menacing whisper and deep chants drive the track’s hypnotic element. ‘pink party’ sees Dunbar at his most bewitching. The frantic, head-spinning synth is laced in swaggered vocals as the track struts in before the hook loaded chorus kicks in. There is an ominous soundscape within this track that is sheer genius. The punctuated beats and aggressive electronics are set to a smeared glitter ball dance vibe which creates a fantastic sonic assault on the senses that is infectious and luring.

Happy New Year to all our followers and subscribers. We have enjoyed finding new artists and music this year and we look forward to listening to the tunes 2021 has to bring. It’s been a difficult year but there was amazing music released this year! Indie Quick Picks – Featuring Shiv, The Goldborns, The Decades, YAWA and Charlie Hanlon

Shiv

Bio : Zimbabwe-born, Kildare-raised singer-songwriter Shiv has released the lyric video for her recently released single ‘Letting You Know’, the third to be taken from her debut EP ‘Me 2 Me’.The lyric video is a lo-fi visual storyboard shot in Paris, where Shiv recently relocated to continue exploring her creative process. Writing, producing and recording her six-track debut EP during a year of self-discovery, shiv was able to reach into her soul to figure out who she really is.

Why We Like It: It’s a deeply emotive and soulful number as Shiv’s silken vocals glide over a lush melody. Bio : West London band/production trio The Goldborns have released their new single ‘Broken Homes’ which was recorded at Mick Jones (Clash) studio.

Why We Like It: This catchy track strolls in on bright guitar riffs and punchy drums as the band create a radiant buoyant number that almost veers into reggae territory. With quirky soundscapes swirling between attitude soaked vocals and a catchy chorus the track is an instant shot of adrenaline.The light indie guitars and elastic bass contrast the stark lyrics as The Goldborns create an upbeat, bouncy and instrumentally rich tune to bop to.

The Decades

Genre : Indie

Bio : The Decades are a four-piece band based in County Wicklow, Ireland comprised of David Mulvey ( Drums), Myles Keogh ( Bass), Rhys Doyle ( Lead guitar ) and Seán Fox ( Rhythm Guitar and Vocals ). Prior to forming the group, Sean had spent many years working on and performing his own songs, opening for the likes of Aslan and Jerry Fish along the way.The group originally came together in the early months of 2020 when both Sean and David met in a music production class in college.

Why We Like It: It’s a swagger soaked indie rock number filled with blistering guitars, a driving rhythmic backdrop and rock n roll vibrancy. The track flows upon slick guitar licks and sharp riffs with a scorching solo thrown in for good measure while the rasped powerful vocals surge with emotion allowing the feet shuffling groove provided by a steamy bass line and pounding drums to get you up and dancing.The rock n roll bravado and well crafted instrumentation makes ‘Electricity’ an outstanding debut.

Bio : Ragerra is an Alternative Rock trio from Dublin. 2019 saw the release of their debut EP “Big Men, They Fall”  as well as numerous headline shows across Ireland & the UK. Ragerra is now about to release their much-anticipated debut album Primal Features in April 2021, they will celebrate the release of Primal Features with a launch party on April 9th in Lost Lane Dublin, Ireland.

Why We Like It: It’s a riff-driven, gritty alternative rock track shrouded in distortion as the band flesh out their acute brawny sound with raw pummeling drums. The song is about the public’s obsession with men who committed a series of Brutal acts back in the 1960’s & 70’s. The Royston Club

Bio : Despite only forming in 2019, the Wrexham four-piece have already self-released an EP and amassed 700,000+ Spotify streams, sold out their first vinyl run, and sold over 1,000 tickets for their debut headline tour planned for Spring 2021. They are fast-becoming the new indie band to watch, with support slots with the likes of The Lathums already secured and support from the likes of The Coral.

Sorcha Richardson

Bio : Irish singer-songwriter Sorcha Richardson has released her new single ‘The Starlight Lounge’ and its accompanying video. The track follows 2019’s brilliant debut LP ‘First Prize Bravery’, and continues a burgeoning creative relationship with James Vincent McMorrow, who co-produced the single. ‘The Starlight Lounge’ also follows Sorcha’s recent success with ‘Out The Gaff’ where she collaborated with Denise Chaila, MuRli, God Knows, and again with producer James Vincent McMorrow.

Why We Like It:  Exuding soft production, warm jazz-like keys, and constant beat the track is a laid back gem which showcases how diverse and exciting Sorcha Richardson is as an artist. This intricately layered number oozes lonely vibes as the keys jangle through a dreamy soundscape and mellow melody. Richardson’s vocals are almost nonchalant as she pierces hazy sonic textures with a sweet tone while warm guitars meander around the hypnotic beat. The Kecks

Bio :The Kecks are truly an international affair – their members come from Germany (drummer Kai Weidle), Australia (guitarist Samuel Telford), Great Britain (bassist Joel Phillips) and Austria (lead singer, Lennart Uschmann). Having initially been founded on the back of a FlixBus on their way to see The Growlers play in Berlin, The Kecks have since established a reputation for writing brutally honest and somewhat unconventional indie-rock that has landed them on Radio X, BBC Radio 6, Amazing Radio, and Spotify editorial playlists.

Why We Like It:  Lennart Uschmann’s voice crawls out from under a sprawling brooding soundscape of twinkling guitars and soft drums with a whisper and almost Bowie-esque quality. Exuding a sombre, sway-like tempo and lamenting guitar refrain the track builds, becoming more expressive and dramatic as Uschmann pines and almost cries over the bittersweet melody. ‘All For Me’ is a stylish retro rock sad banger from The Kecks.

Barefoot Magicians

Genre :Indie Blues

Bio : Barefoot Magicians formed in early 2017 after a recording session In Dublin’s prestigious Windmill Lane Studios. The band dedicates itself to writing and performing original material based around a blues groove. Comprised of Dave Greene on harmonica and vocals, Graham Stewart on Guitars, Brian Steemers on drums & percussion, Paraic Carroll on Bass and Petra žižak on Keys the band has recently enjoyed two live recording sessions in Windmill Lane and Sun Recording Studios with more exciting new material due to be released in the coming months.

Why We Like It: It’s a funky richly arranged number doused in the bluesy sound of Barefoot Magicians. Slick nimble licks on guitar holler between the infectious bass groove and punchy drums making the track instantly catchy and likeable. With warm harmonica blasts weaving between the buoyant foundation and tight percussive shimmy while the catchy melody and shredding solo highlight the tracks hyper infectious aesthetic.

Wild Tibetan Monks

Genre : Indie-rock

Bio : Wild Tibetan Monks are an indie rock band from Dublin comprised of Sean (bass, vocals), Ringo (guitar), and Liam (drums). They met and banded in college in 2011 and performed together for several years, playing covers as well as original material. In 2018 the band traded Dublin for Perth, Australia for a two-year journey of music and exploration. The band toured around Western Australia, and had a varied lineup over the years, including different singers and a horn section. They also began recording their original music.

Why We Like It: It’s a blistering and emotive whack of indie rock as the band use ambient soundscapes to create a tense and airy atmosphere. A repetitive cold refrain on guitar pulses while a wriggling bass line wanders though the tracks spacious backdrop allowing the drum’s light bounce to maintain the foot tapping beat for the verses. The sublime tension boils over for the chorus as the trio flesh out their blazing rock edge. With emotive rasped vocals, oozing passion from every note ‘Cartoons’ is a sublime new track. The meticulous build and shredding guitar work makes Wild Tibetan Monks a band to keep an eye on.

Bio : Electric Blue is the debut single by UK singer songwriter Charles Darling.The song is about the initial spark of connection you feel with someone when you’re first getting to know them. The song is an autobiographical story written with an air of fantasy around its own events. The accompanying music video visually shares some of the deeper themes in the song such as, predestination and love’s subjectivity.

The Lathums

Bio : The Lathums are a melodic indie band from Wigan. The band have released a video for their single ‘I See Your Ghost’.The single follows the announcement that the community-minded band will cut just one, 7″ copy of their cover of Northern Soul classic, The Snake, with owning the one-off record being the only chance of ever hearing it. Ticket holders in an online raffle to grab the vinyl have already raised close to £4,000 to support the fan-led fund to save Wigan Athletic.

Why We Like It: This catchy brisk number bounces upon skittish beats jaunty guitars and a deft dead summoning bass. The rapid lyrics slip through the frantic instrumentation with a cool tone while the vocals coo and haunt all at once. The tempo keeps the tracks brisk pace ticking along like a time bomb. The song is both chilling, spooky and vibrantly dynamic as the band create enticing ethereal verses before whacking out a massive hook laced chorus. With a shredding guitar solo, ghostly vocal bridge and spaghetti western-esque guitar moments the track is impressively crafted. It’s cinematic fun and intoxicating all at once. Love it.

Bio : Dublin native Stephen Cooper started playing music at a young age, performing in various bands before starting solo project Fly the Nest, a name inspired by moving on from a previous musical journey and the adventures music has led him on. As well as writing and releasing his own music, Stephen also writes for sync, and says that writing for film and TV has opened up another facet of his creativity. Stephen now spends his time between Ireland and Denmark, and gigs regularly across Scandinavia. During lockdown, Stephen busked in apartment courtyards, setting up a busking system with some fellow musicians. He has also been focused on songwriting and recording.

Bio : Dublin-based singer/songwriter Graham O’Hara has released his second single, ‘If Only’. ‘If Only’ was recorded in Wavefarm Studios under the direction of producer Kevin Brennan. It is the latest release from Graham after his debut single ‘Unless I Say.’ Graham spent the last decade in different bands and projects before going solo a few years ago. Bio : Musician and producer Seafei reveals his admiration for both Eastern and Western traditions through ambient tracks and laid back beats. Born in Brighton, UK, and now based in Singapore, Seafei was first inspired by the technical and musical power of John Frusciante. Gradually via Odesza through to the sounds of Jai Wolf, Fakear and Kasbo, his personal, organic style has evolved through his influences and travels, both across the globe and through the world of music. Inspired by different parts of Eastern music than can be usually found in the mainstream, he weaves a multitude of sounds from Erhu samples to traditional vocal chanting into his esoteric compositions. Ancient influences are fused with electronic melodies, whilst underneath, his underground beginnings cannot be mistaken.
